June 16, 2009 - Dad Gets 90 Days for Attack on Coach

A man who admitted breaking the jaw of an assistant football coach at his son's high school in Utah after a lost game has been sentenced to 90 days in jail.

Tumua Fagota Siaumau apologized to the coach, Darius McCormick, during his sentencing Monday, The Salt Lake Tribune reported. McCormick coaches at Granger High School in West Valley City.

"I ask that you forgive me," Siaumau said, kneeling before the victim.

In addition to the jail sentence, Siaumau must spend three years on probation, perform 150 hours of community service and get anger management training. He pleaded guilty to third-degree aggravated assault.

McCormick said he still has trouble forgiving his attacker. His jaw, broken with a helmet, is now held together with two steel plates and eight screws.

"You try and get over the anger," he said. "But when my jaw pops and clicks, the same emotions come up."

McCormick said he tried to intervene when he heard Siaumau screaming at his son in Samoan after the Granger team lost its fourth consecutive game in September.
